Summer Eye Safety: Protecting Seniors’ Vision in Riverside

Table of Contents

riverside ca parks

Riverside summers are characterized by abundant, bright sunshine. While we often remember to protect our skin from the sun’s rays, we frequently forget about our eyes. For seniors, cumulative exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can accelerate vision problems, making summer eye safety a crucial part of overall health.

The Impact of UV Rays on Aging Eyes

The eyes become more vulnerable to damage as we age. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays is linked to several serious eye conditions that disproportionately affect seniors:

  • Cataracts: UV exposure accelerates the clouding of the eye’s lens, leading to blurred vision and eventual vision loss.
  • Macular Degeneration: Sun damage can contribute to the deterioration of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision.
  • Photokeratitis: Essentially a sunburn of the cornea, this painful condition can cause temporary vision loss and extreme sensitivity to light.

Choosing the Right Eye Protection

Protecting your eyes is simple, but it requires wearing the right gear. Not all sunglasses are created equal. When selecting eyewear for the summer, seniors should look for:

  • 100% UV Protection: Ensure the sunglasses explicitly state that they block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Wraparound Styles: Glasses that wrap around the sides of the face prevent stray light from entering the eyes from the periphery.
  • Polarized Lenses: While polarization does not block UV rays, it significantly reduces glare from reflective surfaces like water or pavement, which can help prevent falls and reduce eye strain.

Additional Vision Protection Strategies

In addition to wearing high-quality sunglasses, seniors should wear a wide-brimmed hat when spending time outdoors. A hat can block up to half of the UV rays from reaching the eyes. It is also important to schedule an annual comprehensive eye exam to catch any developing issues early.

At Westmont Village Homes in Riverside, we encourage our residents to enjoy our beautiful campus safely. Our staff is always ready to remind residents to grab their hats and sunglasses before heading out for a walk or a community outing.
